The Critical Media Lab
The Critical Media Lab (CML) is a cross-disciplinary research creation initiative developed in the Department of English at the University of Waterloo. The CML fosters the creation of new media projects that explore the impact of technology on humanity and society. The CML serves as a research-creation incubator that links researchers in the Faculty of Arts - and collaborators throughout the University of Waterloo - with the people and tools necessary to apply critically reflective work at the R&D level of technological design and production. This approach, which challenges the boundaries between art and science, research and artistic practice, will result in the invention of new technologies and media artifacts and with advances in collaboration and cooperation across disciplines, industries, and communities engaged in media technology. Current projects explore: participatory activities with geocaching; collaborative multi-touch surfaces; the merger of digital and board game experiences; and the use of heart-rate sensors in the creation of digital art. And, of course, the famous Tweeting Cows.
